What
is a hard shell gourd?
It is a vegetable that grows on a vine similar to a pumpkin. The
vines of the larger gourds reach over 100 feet. Not to be confused
with the ornamental gourds we use for decoration on the Thanksgiving
table. Hard shell gourds are wood, just like trees. Once they are
successfully dried, cleaned and decorated, they will last as long
as any piece of fine wood furniture or sculpture, if properly cared
for.
Care of the decorated gourd
Since a hard shell gourd is wood, care for it the same
as your fine furniture or sculptures. Keep from prolonged, direct
contact with sun and water. Many people want to use them for candleholders,
fountains or flowerpots. There is an over abundance of these items
on the market made of glass, ceramic and metal. Hard shell gourds
should be protected from fire and water.
